FERTITEC: Advancing Sustainable Fertiliser Solutions Through Waste Recycling
The need for sustainable agricultural practices is becoming increasingly urgent. Traditional fertiliser production depletes natural resources and contributes to environmental challenges, while agricultural and industrial waste continues to accumulate. FERTITEC, a Horizon Europe project, aims to bridge this gap by promoting circular solutions that recover and recycle nutrients from secondary raw materials to create high-quality fertilisers.
Funded under the Horizon Europe programme, FERTITEC runs from January 2025 to December 2027 and is coordinated by RISE Research Institutes of Sweden. The project brings together seven partners across 15 countries in Europe and Africa, working towards a sustainable transformation of the agricultural sector. The project will map and analyse the landscape of alternative fertilisers in the EU and East Africa, identify the best available techniques for nutrient recovery, and develop practical tools to support stakeholder engagement. By evaluating environmental, social, and economic factors, FERTITEC aims to support the adoption of sustainable fertiliser products through policy recommendations and knowledge exchange platforms.
The implementation of FERTITEC follows a structured approach. It begins with an assessment of current fertiliser recovery practices and market conditions, followed by an evaluation of the environmental, economic, and social impacts of alternative fertilisers. Stakeholder engagement is a key aspect of the project, ensuring that farmers, policymakers, and industry actors are equipped with practical insights. The project will also focus on scaling up the adoption of sustainable fertiliser solutions, facilitating their wider use at regional and international levels.
As part of a broader movement towards circular economy initiatives, FERTITEC engages closely with researchers, industry partners, policymakers, and farmers to ensure its findings and recommendations are applicable and scalable. Through collaboration, the project aims to drive innovation in fertiliser production and provide practical solutions for sustainable agriculture.
