Even if the purpose with visiting Shanghai is purely contemporary, it is difficult not to be aware of that whatever you do now is probably something that fits into the ever evolving history of the place you visit.
Shanghai is also so large that it incorporates many different histories with a variety of purposes and outcomes – political, religious, economic or romantic.
To me, one of these cultural centres is the former French Concession area and its relation to the white Russian exodus in between 1905 and 1935, in which specifically the Russian women working in the entertainment industry, dancing and otherwise, gave the city its exotic reputation, noted in the guidebooks of the day.
As a celebration of this time and age is Sasha’s bar, still here, located in the heart of the former French Concession for anyone wanting to explore a little bit of it all.
