As part of our commitment to sustainability and innovation, we’re excited to share updates from CiNURGi, a collaborative project aimed at advancing circular nutrient recycling solutions across the Baltic Sea Region (BSR). Led by RISE Research Institutes of Sweden, CiNURGi brings together 24 partners and 13 associated organizations across eight BSR countries to tackle nutrient management challenges while supporting regional and European sustainability goals. Key Highlights from Our First Year
Participation in the EUSBSR Annual Forum 2024

At the EUSBSR Annual Forum in Visby, Sweden, CiNURGi engaged policymakers, researchers, and industry leaders in discussions on nutrient recycling, reducing nutrient runoff, and creating market conditions for circular economy solutions. The project emphasized alignment with the EUSBSR Policy Area Nutri goals and contributed to dialogues shaping sustainable regional development.

Large-Scale Field Trials

We’ve initiated field trials at four diverse locations across the BSR to test the performance of Recycled Nutrient Fertilizers (RNFs). Preliminary data is shaping regional guidelines to establish RNFs as viable alternatives to conventional fertilizers.

Innovative Solutions and Collaboration
  • Drafted industry standards for RNF quality and safety.
  • Evaluated nutrient-rich biomass streams to enhance resource planning.
  • Advanced technologies for phosphorus recovery and biochar-based fertilizers.
  • Collaboration with industry leaders like Yara, EasyMining, and EcoBalance AB strengthens our ability to deliver market-ready solutions.
Engaging Stakeholders

CiNURGi connected with business owners, SMEs, policymakers, and advisors through events like:

  • Borgeby Fältdagar in Sweden
  • Farmari Agricultural Exhibition in Finland
  • ManuResource 2024 in Belgium
  • EUSBSR Annual Forum 2024 in Visby, Sweden

These events showcased RNF applications, fostering cross-sector collaboration.

Policy and Regional Alignment

CiNURGi aligns with initiatives like the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region (EUSBSR), HELCOM’s Nutrient Recycling Strategy, and the European Green Deal, contributing to sustainable agriculture and reduced nutrient runoff.

Addressing Challenges

Despite progress, challenges remain in harmonizing data, regulations, and achieving market acceptance for RNFs. Targeted workshops and partnerships are addressing these gaps to ensure steady, impactful advancements.

Looking Ahead

As we move forward, CiNURGi will focus on piloting solutions, finalizing policy recommendations, and expanding engagement to strengthen the circular nutrient economy. Together with our stakeholders, we aim to build a more sustainable, resilient, and connected Baltic Sea Region.

We invite you to stay connected with us on our journey toward innovative nutrient recycling solutions.
